Adhik Mas: A Holistic Insight

Adhik Maas, also known as Purushottam Maas, holds a unique place in the Hindu lunar calendar, appearing approximately once every three years as an intercalary month. The term “Adhik Maas” finds its roots in the Sanskrit language, where “adhik” translates to “extra”. It signifies the insertion of a thirteenth month into the traditional twelve-month lunar calendar, to adjust for a gentle misalignment between the solar and lunar calendars.

“Purushottam,” often synonymous with Adhik Maas, translates to “the Supreme Divine Being.” This association emphasizes that this extra month isn’t just about time; it’s about aligning with the sacred. It’s a period where the divine invites us to draw closer and bridge the gap. This extra month serves as a canvas for rituals, reflections, charity, fasting, recitation of sacred texts and a renewed sense of devotion.
